Nunatukavut Membership
Nunatukavut (formerly the Labrador Metis Nation) was formed in the early 1980s by southern Inuit who realized that their rights as Aboriginal Canadians were not being considered by governments in decisions being made about land use and social programs.

The southern Inuit of Labrador share commonalities with the nothern Inuit of Labrador, but our communities have distinct histories, customs and traditions. Membership is open to people of Native ancestry, originally from Labrador.

Criteria for Membership
There are three categories of membership:

Full Member - Resident: A person of Inuit descent who is a member of the historic Inuit community of South/Central Labrador and who is accepted by the Modern Inuit community as represented by NunatuKavut. A current permanent resident of one of the outlined areas for the past six months.

Full Member – Non-Resident: A person of Inuit descent who is a member of the historic Inuit community of South/Central Labrador and who is accepted by the Modern Inuit community as represented by NunatuKavut. This person must:
  • Be a citizen of Canada
  • Maintain current contact with members living in one of the designated areas.
  • Have at least one grand parent who was/is aboriginal, of Inuit descent, and resident of one of the designated areas.

Alliance: An aboriginal person who does not qualify for full membership. This person must:
  • Be a Labradorian who is from one of NunatuKavut's historic areas.
  • Have at least one grand parent who was/is aboriginal and resident of one of the designated areas.

Alliance Members may benefit from Aboriginal representation, affirmative action, various government sponsored services and programs (i.e., human resources development and education) and entrepreneurial business opportunities.

Application
The application form for membership was revised in the spring of 2008 following a change in the definition of membership criteria at the 2007 Annual General Assembly. This was necessary to provide clarity in the definition of Nunatukavut culture, heritage and membership. The land claims process and pursuit of Aboriginal rights require more than just general Aboriginal ancestry, but also the illustration of a historic and continued community. The change requires all previous members to re-apply for membership. The re-application process enables the Membership Committee to review all applications based on the new criteria. A complete review will bring clarity to all aspects of membership, from how we define ourselves to more practical aspects such as maintaining accurate and up to date membership data.
